Most of the time these days I shoot in colour because that’s the way it is with digital cameras. Frequently though, I make several versions both in colour and black and white in Lightroom before deciding on the best. Sometimes it is easy to see if the colour is irrelevant in an image or that the black and white version doesn’t actually get to the essence you are striving for but often two versions may remain for maybe a year before I am far enough away from the image to decide.
Some of these digital images were conceived in my mind during shooting as purely black and white. There are also some pictures that were shot on black and white film where I thinking only of monochrome.
I don’t think that either approach – the second contemplation at the computer or the direct vision – is better than the other. For me the main thing is that the picture works.
